DESCRIPTION:Intervening structures in the universe give rise to small dist
ortions \nin the shapes of distant galaxies. By measuring this tiny coher
ent \nsignal\, we can study the mass distribution in the universe directl
y\, \nwithout relying on baryonic tracers. This makes weak lensing by lar
ge- \nscale structures a powerful probe of cosmology. I will review the \
ntopic of cosmic shear and discuss how the signal is extracted from the \
ndata. I will present results from recent surveys\, most notably the \nCF
HT Legacy Survey and COSMOS. Finally I will discuss what will be \nrequir
ed to significantly improve constraints on the properties of \ndark energ
 y.
