DESCRIPTION:Topological insulators are a new class of band insulators with
topological order. They were originally discovered in the context of a sp
in version of the quantum Hall effect. The quantization of spin currents i
s not however a characteristic feature of these\,rather\, it is the existe
nce of edge states which are robust in the presence of small perturbations
which preserve time reversal symmetry. In three dimensions I will show th
at a novel class of topological insulators which have no quantum Hall anal
og is possible. Recent experiments on\nbismuth antimony alloys and other m
aterials seem to indicate that this novel phase is realised in these mater
 ials.\n
