DESCRIPTION:During the last few years\, research conducted on the Italian
property tax records (estimi) has led to the identification of relatively
rare cases when these sources include good-quality information about occup
ations across society. Combined with other\, more sporadic sources\, the e
stimi allow us to get an impression of the occupational structures prevail
ing in different Italian regions and epochs\, from the fifteenth to the ei
ghteenth century. Additionally\, as the same sources also allow to establi
sh the relative wealth of different households\, it is possible to explore
the occupations prevailing across different social-economic strata: begin
ning with the rich\, who are those for whom we have the most complete info
 rmation.
