DESCRIPTION:The rewiring of mitochondrial metabolism serves as an innate i
mmune-type defense mechanism that restricts the growth of the human parasi
te Toxoplasma gondii. We recently reported a previously undescribed struct
ure we term SPOT (structure positive for outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM
) that emerges from the OMM during infection. We propose that Toxoplasma h
ijacks the formation of SPOTs\, a cellular response to OMM import stress\,
to counteract mitochondrial nutrient defense and promote its growth. Here
\, I discuss the fate and function of these peculiar structures.
