DESCRIPTION:The basic requirements for quantum computing have been demonst
rated \nin many trapped ion experiments and work in the Oxford ion trap g
roup \ntowards scaling up the number of qubits in our system and increasi
ng \nthe fidelity of operations upon individual qubits will be presented.
   \nWe are designing\, fabricating\, and testing multi-zone traps which \
nshould allow us to manipulate larger numbers of trapped ions. A \nfurthe
r requirement for scability is protection against decoherence \nand we de
monstrate the use of\ngeneralized spin echo pulses to guard against that c
aused by magnetic \nfield fluctuations. Finally we\nhave been studying hi
gh-fidelity readout using different detection \nmethods. We have already
 reported high-fidelity readout for a single \nqubit (99.99% in 145us) usi
ng a photomultiplier\, and we have now also\ndemonstrated simultaneous hig
 h-fidelity readout of a register of 4 \nions using a CCD camera.\n
