DESCRIPTION:The high resolution\, all-weather\, remote sensing of Syntheti
c Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging is already employed for a wide range of tas
ks from mapping\, surveillance\, environmental monitoring and many other u
ses. Interferometry allows a pair of SAR images from slightly different gr
azing angles to be used to estimate height within a scene\, but this provi
des a single estimate for each pixel in the image and has limitations in c
omplex environments where layover and multipath may mean that there are re
flections from multiple objects in the same pixel. SAR tomography expands
the usual 2-D images to generate 3-dimensional images of an area allowing
greater understanding of the objects in a scene. This talk provides some b
ackground on SAR and the challenges in producing tomographic images.
