DESCRIPTION:*Theme: Adaptive Brain Computations*\n\n*Abstract:* Why do we
make decisions impulsively blinded in an emotionally rash moment? Or caugh
t in the same repetitive suboptimal loop\, avoiding fears or rushing headl
ong towards illusory rewards? These cognitive constructs underlying self-c
ontrol and compulsive behaviours and their influence by emotion or incenti
ves are relevant dimensionally across healthy individuals and hijacked acr
oss disorders of addiction\, compulsivity and mood. My lab focuses on iden
tifying theory-driven modifiable biomarkers focusing on these cognitive co
nstructs with the ultimate goal to optimize and develop novel means of neu
romodulation. Here I will provide a few examples of my group’s recent wo
rk to illustrate this approach. I describe a series of recent studies on i
ntracranial physiology and acute stimulation focusing on risk taking and e
motional processing. This talk highlights the subthalamic nucleus\, a comm
on target for deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease and obsessi
ve-compulsive disorder. I further describe recent translational work in no
n-invasive neuromodulation. Together these examples illustrate the approac
h of the lab highlighting modifiable biomarkers and optimizing neuromodula
tion.\n\n*Biography:* Valerie Voon is a Professor in the Dept of Psychiatr
y at the University of Cambridge and at Fudan University in Shanghai China
and a consultant neuropsychiatrist with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborou
gh NHS Foundation Trust. Her group investigates mechanisms underlying self
-control and repetitive behaviours and the influence of emotion and incent
ives. Her lab focuses on integrative neuromodulation identifying modifiabl
e biomarkers using multiple modalities with the goal to optimize and devel
op novel means of neuromodulation. \n\nRegister in advance for this meetin
