DESCRIPTION:Betalains\, the pigments restricted to some plants within the
order Caryophyllales\, have gained great interest in the last decades due
to their properties as antioxidant\, antitumoral and anti-inflammatory com
pounds but also due to their biosynthetic compounds pathway. Gene duplicat
ions within the lineage of the key enzyme L-DOPA-extradiol-dioxygenase (DO
DA) gave rise to enzymes with high dioxygenase activity\, via neofunctiona
lization\, involved in the production of betalains. Additionally\, the con
vergent evolution of betalains has recently been confirmed by analyses of
the evolution of the key enzyme DODA.\n\nThe reconstruction of these indep
endent duplications within the different origins might help to understand
the different molecular changes that were decisive in this gain of functio
n\, which may help to engineer these enzymes with higher efficiency in bet
alains production and could be of great interest to food\, pharmaceutical
 and cosmetics industries.\n
