act: Gluons constitute the bulk of the mass of the visible universe and pl
ay a major role in determining the fundamental properties of protons\, neu
trons and other hadrons\, but their arrangement within hadrons is relative
ly poorly known. The one-dimensional structural properties of hadrons are
partly encoded in parton distribution functions (PDFs)\, which capture the
ir longitudinal momentum structure. Our knowledge of the gluon PDF of the
nucleon has been significantly improved by the wealth of data from the Lar
ge Hadron Collider\, but many aspects of gluon structure are still unclear
. I will introduce the techniques used to determine hadron structure from
lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD)\, the numerical solution of QCD on a
Euclidean spacetime lattice\, and then discuss the HadStruc collaboration'
s recent attempts to understand the gluon structure of hadrons\, outlining
some of the challenges involved in these first-principles calculations.
