DESCRIPTION:The rapid increase in availability and usability of high resol
ution remote sensing technologies\, whether in the lab\, from the ground\,
air and from satellites\, has significantly expanded the choice of monito
ring tools available to environmental scientists. For forest ecology\, new
sensing platforms allow both larger scale and higher resolution monitorin
g than ever before\, but come with significant challenges in use and inter
pretation. In this talk I will present some of the exciting new opportunit
ies offered by these technologies for both re-visiting traditional ecologi
cal questions and devising new lines of investigation. I will also discuss
the challenges and limitations of these data\, and how modern data scienc
e techniques\, including deep learning approaches\, can overcome some of t
 hese.\n
