SUMMARY:Exploring wind instruments through simulation - Professor Jim Wood
 house (CUED)

DESCRIPTION:The talk will look at the physics behind some musical wind ins
truments: the reed woodwinds\, and the brass family. These all rely on an
acoustical feedback loop\, involving the linear acoustics of the instrumen
t tube and a nonlinear flow valve at the reed or the brass-player’s lips
. Simulation models will be used to explore the details of the resulting w
aveforms\, and also to map the playing behaviour into a graphical represen
tation of a parameter space relevant to the player. These “playability m
aps” shed light on what has to be learned by a beginner on these instrum
ents\, in order to get the best out of their instrument.
