DESCRIPTION:This presentation offers insights from a study of 57 primary a
nd secondary school teachers who began teaching in 2003. The project has t
racked their progress since they gained their full registration in 2005. D
ata sources are the teachers themselves - their personal beliefs and value
s\; what they think about their careers\; their day-to-day work in classro
oms and schools\; and the place of teaching in their lives. Our concern ha
s been to discover how the work of teaching has turned out in practice\; h
ow school contexts have interacted with the teachers' expectations of teac
hing\; and the opportunities they have had to develop their abilities to a
ssist all children and young people to learn effectively. As a longitudina
l study insights have been gained into the reasons why some have decided t
o stay in teaching while others have lost heart and left. The study includ
es rich case studies to illustrate the ways in which early career experien
ces matter for the retention of teachers. The study highlights what sustai
ns those who decide to stay in teaching and whether this includes extendin
g their roles beyond the classroom into early leadership.
