DESCRIPTION:In this talk we discuss the findings of a recent study on rein
forced concrete elements subjected to shear. Starting from a prismatic ref
erence geometry\, a preferential internal load-path was progressively isol
ated. Volumes of concrete that were not part of this resisting mechanism w
ere replaced with a low-strength concrete\, or left unfilled. This led to
a net increase in overall resistance and ductility of the specimens. The r
emoval of material from the structure\, and the decrease in material stren
gth in some regions of the structure\, strengthened it. This paradox and t
he counter-intuitive results of the study are explained with new concepts
such as ‘shear compliance’ and ‘engineered crack propagation’\, bu
t also through the analysis of historical structures. \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom M
