eploying structural flexible tubes - Dr Andrew Viquerat\, University of Su

DESCRIPTION:Tape-springs and other related slit and closed-section flexibl
e tubes are often used as lightweight extendable structural members. Advan
tages of these structures include a very compact coiled stowed state\, and
a controllable deployed length. Limitations of these structures in their
deployed state include low torsional stiffness and buckling strength\, and
typically large thermally induced distortions. This talk will provide an
introduction to some of the challenges encountered in the storage an uncoi
ling of these tubes\, including the formation of localised folds\, local b
uckling\, deployment shock\, and ‘blossoming’\, and will discuss some
of the practical approaches taken to remedy them. Examples will primarily
be taken from the space industry\, which has arguably been the scene of th
e greatest proliferation in coiled tape-spring-like deployment mechanism d
esigns and applications.\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting https://eng-cam.zoom.us/j/
