DESCRIPTION:In standard 2-derivative GR coupled to matter obeying the Null
Energy condition\, the Bekenstein-Hawking definition of the entropy of a
black hole can be proved to satisfy a Second Law of Black Hole Mechanics.
However\, if we consider higher derivative theories of gravity this no lon
ger necessarily holds. \nIn recent work\, Hollands\, Kovács and Reall hav
e built on previous work of Wall to provide a definition of dynamical blac
k hole entropy for gravitational effective field theories (EFTs). This ent
ropy satisfies a Second Law to quadratic order in perturbations around a s
tationary black hole. In this talk I will present the construction of the
entropy\, some explicit calculations for particular theories including Ein
stein-Gauss-Bonnet that I have performed\, and the problem of gauge invari
ance for this definition. The talk is based off the recent paper arxiv.org
 /abs/2212.09777.
