DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked at the geology on show in your own colleg
e\, or in those\nyou pass every day? Cambridge buildings\, many of them in
colleges or\nUniversity sites\, record nearly a millennium of stone use\,
probably the best\nrecord of any city in the UK.\n\nA new survey of Cambr
idge buildings shows the predominance of limestones\; 65%\nfrom the Jurass
 ic Lincolnshire Limestone Formation\, 10% from Jurassic units\nelsewhere i
n England and 19% from elsewhere\, mostly the local Cretaceous Chalk\nGrou
 p. Another finding of the survey is that\, until the completion of canal\n
links to southwest England in 1815 and railway links across England in 184
5\,\nalmost all Cambridge stone came from within 80 kilometres of the city
. The\ntalk will take an illustrated walk through the past millennium of s
tone use\nand identify other less obvious factors that have influenced the
choice of\nstone\, for instance the Black Death\, the Wars of the Roses a
nd the Dissolution\nof the Monasteries. We’ll also learn how to tell apa
rt some of the\nsuperficially similar common limestones.\n\nWe’ll take e
xamples from a wide range of colleges. However\, if your college\ndoesn’
t feature\, I’ll provide links to a newly revised guide to the geology o
f\neach college\, as well as to more detailed accounts of building stone h
istory\nin Cambridge. I’m also glad to take a geological walk with group
s of you\naround your own college.
