DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, all secondary school examinations in the UK were can
 celled due to the ensuing COVID-19 pandemic. Lacking formal examination re
 sults and in an attempt to ensure consistency and control for grade inflat
 ion\, an algorithm was used by the Office of Qualifications and Examinatio
 ns Regulation (Ofqual) to estimate students’ final grades. The use of th
 is algorithm ultimately led to significant public backlash and it was subs
 equently abandoned. Roger Taylor was Chair of Ofqual at the time and will 
 speak about this stormy and controversial episode in education history. Th
 ere will be approximately 10 minutes for questions at the end of the talk.
