 nd atmospheric role - Prof. Ian Smith\, Department of Chemistry\, Universi

DESCRIPTION:The HO3 radical has attracted considerable attention recently
 from both experimentalists and theoreticians\, but there remains no reliab
 le experimental information on its enthalpy of formation (delfHo) – or\,
  equivalently\, the dissociation energy D(0) of the HO-OO bond.\n\nI shall
  describe new low temperature experiments performed in a continuous flow C
 RESU apparatus in Rennes which yield both third-order rate constants for t
 he reaction\, OH + O2 + M -> HO3 + M at temperatures between 55 and 80 K\,
  and the measurement of equilibrium constants for the reaction at ca. 90 K
  from which values of delfHo and D(0) can be derived. D(0) is approximatel
 y half the upper bound to this quantity derived by Lester and co-workers\,
  indicating that the formation of HO3 will have only a slight influence on
  the chemistry of the Earth’s atmosphere.\n
