DESCRIPTION:The launch of the James Webb Space Telescope followed by the s
uccessful deployment of its sun shield and optics has ushered in a new era
in astronomy. The six-month commissioning period revealed a telescope and
set of instruments that outperform the pre-launch predictions. The image q
uality of the telescope is spectacular which in turn enhances the science
return. The sensitivity stemming from the great image quality means that o
bserving programs will yield better signal to noise\, and deep surveys wil
l see further back in time. The first programs are yielding new insights i
nto areas of astronomy ranging from the first galaxies to form after the B
ig Bang to the composition and climates of planets orbiting other stars.
