DESCRIPTION:Wide-sky surveys with radio telescopes such as the Square Kilo
metre Array Observatory (SKAO) will soon be competing to lead the way in p
robing density fluctuations on the largest scales in the late Universe. Th
is will be achieved by surveying diffuse 21cm emission from extragalactic
neutral hydrogen (HI)\, a technique known as HI intensity mapping. This wi
ll be a primary aim for the future SKAO once constructed. However\, pathfi
nder experiments such as the 64-dish MeerKAT telescope are already operati
onal and will provide spectroscopic surveys with competitive volumes. I wi
ll present the first detection of cosmological signal using HI intensity m
apping with a multi-dish array. This detection was achieved by cross-corre
lating MeerKAT pilot survey intensity maps with overlapping optical galaxi
es from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. A measurement of the power spectru
 m between these fields provided a 7.7σ detection of a cross-correlation.
This detection is the first practical demonstration of the multi-dish inte
nsity mapping technique\, crucial for the SKAO's capability to probe ultra
-large scales. This marks an important milestone in the roadmap for the co
smology science case with the full SKAO. I will discuss the cosmological s
cience goals with MeerKAT and also look ahead to what can be achieved with
  the SKAO.
