DESCRIPTION:This paper presents an archaeological survey of the island of
Polyaigos\, undertaken in 2022 by the Small Cycladic Islands Project (SCIP
). Since 2019 SCIP has surveyed 45 uninhabited islands in the Aegean\, mos
t of which are well under 1 square kilometer in size. In order to address
research questions concerning the relationship between island size and int
ensity of use\, it was important also to include larger islands in the stu
dy. At 18 square kilometers in size\, Polyaigos is the largest uninhabited
island in the Aegean. SCIP used a layered approach to survey across diffe
rent spatial scales: island-wide lidar analysis and ground truthing\, samp
 le-based intensive fieldwalking\, and site-based gridded collection\, dron
e survey\, and architectural documentation. This lecture examines the resu
lts of these forms of data collection side-by-side\, in order to examine t
heir contributions to the long-term history of an archaeological landscape
on multiple scales. Marginality and connectivity emerge as themes of part
icular importance\, which vary considerably over time based on local devel
opments on Polyaigos itself\, the regional context of the southern Cyclade
s\, and the wider Aegean and eastern Mediterranean networks of which Polya
igos was (at times) a part.\n\n \n\nZoom joining details:\n\nZoom link: ht
