DESCRIPTION:Configuration spaces are tools to study manifolds "a few point
s at a time" and their homology can capture more information than the homo
logy of a space itself. I will defend this claim by focusing on how the ho
mology of configuration spaces of surfaces viewed as representations of th
e surface mapping class group "sees deeper into" the mapping class group t
han does the homology of the surface. We will see two approaches for doing
this: one more algebraic\, through mapping spaces\, and one more construc
 tive and pictorial.
