Manufacture help deliver innovative material solutions? - Prof. Iain Todd

DESCRIPTION:Additive Manufacture (AM) in metals and alloys presents engine
ers and designers with an opportunity to reimagine both component design a
nd their means of manufacture. It is however\, not without its challenges
 - high amongst them being that of manufacturing parts to be defect-free. S
ometimes\, however\, the presence of defects can be advantageous\, enablin
g us to exert high degree of microstructural control or even to improve ma
terial properties under certain circumstances. In this talk I will cover h
ow defects can form in AM\, how we can avoid them but also how we may use
them to our advantage in manufacture of engineering components by AM.
