DESCRIPTION:Research on data and data-intensive technologies such as Artif
icial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly critical in the last decad
 e. Decolonial\, intersectional feminist and other theoretical frameworks h
ave been employed to make sense of new and existing asymmetries. This work
shop proposes to reflect about the implications of this turn for research
praxis. Some of the questions explored are: How can research make global-s
cale claims in a way that is attentive to local agencies? What collaborati
ons are possible between academia and marginalised communities? How can re
searchers themselves reproduce extractive dynamics?\n\nThe four distinguis
hed speakers have conducted work at the intersection of critical data stud
ies and media and communications. The workshop will begin with a welcome l
unch\, which will be followed by three thematic blocks. Each of these bloc
ks will include a presentation (20 minutes) and group activities designed
 and led by a chair (30 minutes). \n\nThere will be 25 participants\, who w
ill range from PhD students to early career researchers. An invitation wil
l be shared with the Cambridge community\, which will be extended to poten
tial attendees from other universities depending on availability. The work
shop is free of charge.\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\nProfessor Mirca Madianou is a Pr
ofessor at the Department of Media\, Communications and Cultural Studies a
t Goldmisths University. Her research examines the social uses and consequ
ences of communication technologies in a transnational and comparative con

disaster recovery\, humanitarianism and their intersection with digital te
chnology. \n\nProfessor Nick Couldry is Professor of Media\, Communication
s and Social Theory in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE.
As a sociologist of media and culture\, he approaches media and communicat

concentrated in media institutions. Couldry is a co-founder of Tierra Com
ún.\n\nProfessor Ulises Ali Mejias is Professor of Communication Studies
at SUNY Oswego in the United States. His research interests include critic
al internet studies\, network theory and science\, philosophy of technolog
y\, sociology of communication\, and political economy of digital media. U
lises Ali Mejias is also a co-founder of Tierra Común and the Non-Aligned
Technologies Movement.\n\nDr Andrea Medrado is a Senior Lecturer at the S
chool of Media and Communication. Her current research analyses the ways i
n which digital activists and art-ivists from marginalised communities in
Global South countries (particularly Brazil and Kenya) can exchange experi
ences and lessons\, promoting an exploration of mutuality between them. Me
drado is currently exploring participatory methods in the study of platfor
 ms and data-intensive technologies.\n\nHosts & Chairs:\n\nDr Sharath Srniv
asan (host) is the David and Elaine Potter Associate Professor in the Depa
rtment of Politics and International Studies\, a Fellow of King's College\
, Cambridge\, and a Co-Director of CGHR. He is an interdisciplinary and ap

ociate Professor of the Sociology of New Media and Digital Technology as w
ell as the Anthony L. Lyster Fellow in Sociology at Queens’ College and
Co-Director of the CGHR. She is also Deputy Head of Cambridge's School of
the Humanities and Social Sciences. Ella McPherson’s research is concern
ed with symbolic struggles surrounding the media in times of transition.\n

e CGHR\, a Technology and Human Rights Fellow at the Carr Centre for Human
Rights at Harvard University\, and a member of the Tierra Común network.

gital technology in relation to global social justice with a focus on Lati
n America. \n\nSaide Mobayed Vega (chair) is a PhD researcher at the Depar
