SUMMARY:Shallow water modelling of rainfall-runoff processes - Dr D Liang

DESCRIPTION:Shallow water equations (Saint-Venant equations) can be derive
d from depth-integrating the Navier-Stokes equations. They are widely used
in hydraulic and hydrological analyses. This talk will first introduce th
e properties of these equations and their numerous variations\, as well as
the suitable computational methods. The talk will then focus on the appli
cation of these equations to the prediction of the rainfall-runoff process
es over impervious urban catchments\, focusing on the influence of urban c
 onfigurations\, e.g. road width\, building coverage and orientation\, on t
he normalised time of concentration\, which is a hydrological parameter to
indicate the response time of the catchment to a rain event. The talk wil
l also present some experimental and numerical results on the runoff of di
 ssolvable pollutants over urban grounds.
