DESCRIPTION:How much information about an ordinary irreducible character d
etermines the character? I will discuss this question for the symmetric an
d alternating groups\, with a focus on two interpretations of 'information
': the values on p'-classes\, and the zero values. Interest in the zeros o
f a character date back to Burnside\, while our question in the case of va
lues on p'-classes also tells us about the modular representation theory o
f the group: characters agreeing on p'-classes corresponds to equal rows i
n the decomposition matrix. In the case of the alternating group\, I will
highlight an apparent connection between these two determination problems
that is the subject on ongoing work.
