DESCRIPTION:Current research into the relative chronologies of the Zalavru
 ga rock carvings in western Russia has opened a number of possibilities in
  their analysis. Not least is the idea of compositional sequences\; viewin
 g carving\nproduction as occurring in phases through time. This talk exami
 nes the rock carvings of Zalavruga and asks that perennial question of sem
 iotics: in examining representation through time\, how can we observe and 
 explain change?
