DESCRIPTION:We discuss the approximation of data from one- and two-dimensi
 onal\ncurves using total variation-based techniques. Our aim will be to\nm
 inimise complexity among all functions which satisfy a criterion for\nappr
 oximation. Complexity will be measured by the number of local\nextreme val
 ues or variational properties of the functions. Our criteria\nfor approxim
 ation will be based on a multiscale analysis of the\nresiduals.\n
