DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Modern French Research Seminar warmly invites yo
u to its next meeting\, where Prof Giuliana Bruno will present her new bo
ok considering the interrelations of projection\, atmosphere\, and environ
ment.\n\nWhat is an atmosphere? What do atmospheres project? How do they c
reate an environment? Atmospheres of Projection: Environmentality in Art
and Screen Media explores the histories of projection and atmosphere in vi
sual culture and their continued importance to contemporary artists\, film
makers\, and architects who are reinventing the projective imagination wit
h atmospheric thinking and the use of elemental media. Bruno traverses psy
choanalysis\, environmental philosophy\, architecture\, the history of sci
ence\, visual art\, and moving image culture to see how projective mechani
sms and their environments have developed over time. In so doing\, she giv
es new life to the alchemic possibilities of transformative projective atm
ospheres. Showing how their “environmentality” produces sites of excha
nge and relationality\, this book binds art to the ecology of atmosphere.\
n\n\n“Moving with mercurial fleetness and animation across alchemy\, geo
 metry\, mathematics\, psychoanalysis\, architecture\, and ecological thoug
ht\, Bruno reveals how projection is bound\, not to the sharply defined pl
anes and angles of perspective thinking\, but to the dispersive permeation
s of environments and milieux.”\n—Steven Connor\, University of Cambri
dge\n\n\nThis event is co-hosted by the French Section\, Cambridge Film an
d Screen\, and the Italian Section. Prof Bruno's talk will be followed by
a drinks reception at the McCrum. \n\n(Please note that the McCrum Lecture
