DESCRIPTION:In this paper\, we examine the notion of _expertise by experie
 nce_ with reference to mental health research\, discussing some of the obj
 ections commonly raised against its legitimacy. The best way to characteri
 se the integration of different forms of expertise is to describe the proc
 ess as a case of _perspectives in dialogue_\, where a perspective is a way
  of referring to how something appears from a particular standpoint\, whic
 h acknowledges the relevance of that standpoint to what is foregrounded\;
 and a dialogue is a means of sharing insights\, carried out to support rec
 iprocal understanding. Co-design and co-production approaches encourage pe
 rspective taking and use group processes and facilitation to support commu
 nity consensus building. It is through such collaborative and relational p
 rocesses that common objections against the legitimacy of expertise by exp
 erience can be addressed.
