DESCRIPTION:Information systems in manufacturing are traditionally based o
n a three layer architecture consisting of an enterprise resource planning
(ERP) \nsystem\, a manufacturing execution system (MES)\, and the shop fl
oor IT. Increasing requirements on flexibility and adaptability are a str
ong \ndriver for more open architectures\, targeting a closer integration
of ERP and the manufacturing floor. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
\nchips will play an important role in this transition - provided they a
re tightly integrated into existing legacy architectures. Modern \nsupply
chains require in particular (i) flexible mechanisms to forward customer o
rders to the manufacturing floor\, (ii) tools to integrate \nbusiness proc
esses of cooperating vendors in a highly dynamic fashion\, and (iii) RFID
infrastructures that collect and filter logistic and \nshop floor data\, t
hen feed them into strategic IT components. This talk presents related les
sons from six case studies conducted with small and \nmedium-size automoti
 ve and electronic suppliers.\n
