DESCRIPTION:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer some of the most excitin
g and innovative new materials available at the present time\, and have at
tracted particular attention for their gas adsorption and storage properti
es with wide-ranging potential applications in chemistry and biology. An i
nteresting recent discussion has been how big a part (if any) 'design' pla
ys their synthesis. In this presentation I will discuss our recent work in
preparing MOFs for applications such as novel types of protecting groups
in organic synthesis\, super selective gas adsorbers and medical delivery
agents. Along the way I will discuss if we can claim any of these material
 s have been designed.
