DESCRIPTION:The concept of a Magnetically Arrested Disk (MAD) is interesti
ng because it provides a way to maximize the extraction of spin energy fro
m the central black hole\, potentially powering jets. But how and whether
they can be formed in nature is controversial. I will discuss some basic
physical ideas underpinning MADs and argue that they may be relatively ea
sy to form and maintain\, but not quite in the way proponents have suggest
ed. In addition to being a key element in modeling results from the Even
t Horizon Telescope\, MADs may be crucial for solving a number of longstan
ding puzzles in accretion disk theory.\n
