DESCRIPTION:Njinga of Ndongo is one of history’s most fascinating rulers
 . The first ‘female king’ of her kingdom\, Ndongo in west-central Afri
 ca\, she led a sixty-year resistance against the Portuguese who tried to c
 onquer it. Her story has recently been turned into a Netflix docu-drama se
 ries by Jada Pinkett Smith. Luke Pepera\, one of its main contributors\, s
 peaks about Njinga’s life\, legacy\, and how African history is inspirin
 g a new wave of stories.\n\nLuke Pepera is a writer\, broadcaster\, anthro
 pologist\, and historian\, specialising in African history. He was born in
  Ghana and studied Archaeology & Anthropology at Oxford. He’s written ar
 ticles\, presented documentaries\, and appeared on numerous podcasts. Curr
 ently\, he’s working on his first book\, Motherland: 500\,000 Years of A
 frican History\, Cultures\, and Identity\, to be published in 2024 by Weid
