DESCRIPTION:Linguistic variation resulting from differences in register is
relatively easy to detect in periods for which there are extremely large
corpora of texts whose context is well understood\; however\, in periods w
hen the corpora for a given language is more restricted\, identifying the
factors responsible for observed variation can be more difficult. The focu
s of this talk will be on morphosyntactic variation and the empirical issu
es involved in determining its nature\, and in particular on certain types
of variation occurring in Old English.
