DESCRIPTION:The classical scattering of cylindrical gravitational waves wi
 th zero cosmological constant is governed by a two dimensional integrable 
 system.&nbsp\; The reason it is integrable is that it has a hidden Kac-Moo
 dy symmetry called the Geroch group.&nbsp\; We will review these facts and
  then describe some recent results on a quantum version of this story.
