DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, our understanding of how cells transition fr
om proliferation to differentiation has been transformed by the applicatio
n of single cell quantitative approaches and live imaging. Such approaches
have led to by discovery of short-time scale protein expression oscillati
ons which are exemplified by the expression of HES/Her transcription facto
rs in neural progenitors. In my talk\, I show how dynamic single cell live
imaging of knocked-in reporters can be combined with mathematical modelli
ng to analyse ultradian oscillations during vertebrate neural development\
, taking into consideration heterogeneity and stochasticity. I will show h
ow single cell oscillations undergo multiscale synthesis when cells intera
ct in a tissue environment and how the emergent pattern may control the ra
 te and spacing of differentiation.
