 g\, Director\, Paul Scherrer Institute

DESCRIPTION:Spins form well-defined lattices in many insulating quantum ma
terials and serve as model systems to study many-body states such as corre
lated quantum dimers\, Luttinger liquids\, or magnon Bose-Einstein condens
ates. Neutrons and photons are unique tools for high-precision studies of
such states in and beyond equilibrium and under multi-extreme conditions i
n temperature\, pressure and magnetic field. An overview of current fronti
ers in the field will be presented with special focus on exciting new oppo
rtunities that free electron lasers like SwissFEL offer to study out-of-eq
 uilibrium many-body quantum phenomena.
