DESCRIPTION:This talk is prompted by recent concerns in the media about th
 e status of the cooling system and safety of the facility.  The content of
  the lecture includes an overview of the design of the VVER reactor\, lay-
 out and status of the plant and its 6 reactors\, and potential risk factor
 s concerning the cooling system\, shelling\, and power outage. After the l
 ecture\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. The aim of this ta
 lk is to inform a technical audience and provide context to the media mess
 aging. \n\nThe talk will be given by Eugene Shwageraus\, Professor in Nucl
 ear Energy Systems Engineering at the Cambridge University Engineering Dep
 artment and Course Director for the MPhil in Nuclear Energy. Professor Shw
 ageraus’ research is focussed on physics and engineering of conventional
  and advanced nuclear power reactors\, with a particular interest in Monte
  Carlo methods applied to radiation transport\, as well as modelling of nu
 clear systems to assist policy decision making.
