DESCRIPTION:The hard sphere model is one of the oldest and simplest models
  of a gas of interacting particles. Simply put\, the hard sphere model pla
 ces non-overlapping\, identical spheres uniformly at random in a fixed box
 . Despite its simple nature\, the hard sphere model is at the heart of maj
 or challenges in a number of different fields. In this talk I will introdu
 ce the hard sphere model and discuss its connections to statistical mechan
 ics\, the theory of algorithms\, and the sphere packing problem. I will di
 scuss some of the aforementioned challenges\, discuss the connections betw
 een them\, and survey some recent progress on these topics.&nbsp\;
