DESCRIPTION:Investigative interviews are a crucial evidence-gathering stag
e within the Criminal Justice System\, yet they are also socially and cogn
itively demanding for interviewees. The social and cognitive differences e
xperienced by autistic people mean that interviews can be especially chall
enging for them. For example\, understanding others’ mental states\, int
erpreting social contexts\, recalling personally experienced events from m
emory\, and engaging in reciprocal social communication are all often diff
icult for autistic people. These characteristics constitute significant ba
rriers to autistic adults providing credible\, accurate and reliable inter
view statements during criminal proceedings unless a more enabling environ
ment is provided. In this talk\, I will present a series of research studi
es evidencing the difficulties experienced by autistic witnesses during in
vestigative interviews and alternative evidence-based interviewing techniq
ues that are compatible within a legally-appropriate framework. I will dis
cuss the further challenges faced by autistic suspects\, before outlining
a new program of research focussing on the court system.
