DESCRIPTION:The "forest" of hydrogen and helium Lyman-alpha absorption lin
es observed in the \nspectra of distant quasars encodes information on the
physics of structure formation\, \nthe nature of the dark matter\, and th
e temperature and ionization state of baryons in the\nUniverse. In this ta
lk I will describe the multiple steps needed to connect flux \nfluctuation
s in quasar spectra to physical parameters\, present an unprecedented suit
e \nof thousands of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of structur
e formation with \ndifferent gas thermal histories along with different fr
ee-streaming lengths of (warm) \ndark matter particles\, and use it to per
form a statistical comparison of mock spectra with the\nobserved 1D flux p
 ower spectrum and other data.
