DESCRIPTION:*Slides "available":http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/srg/opera
 /meetings/attachments/2009-11-10-HealthInfSystem_Fernando.pdf .*\n\n*Abstr
act:*\n\nThe patient care context comprises outdated\ninfrastructure\, per
vasive computer use\, shared\nclinical workspace\, aural privacy shortcomi
 ngs\,\ninterruptive work settings\, confusing legislation\,\npoor privacy
and security (P&S) eHealth training\noutcomes and inadequate budgets.\nTwe
nty three medical\, nursing and allied health\nclinicians working in Austr
alia (Victoria)\nparticipated in qualitative research examining work\nprac
tices with P&S for patient care. They criticised\na slow\, inefficient eHe
alth information system (eHIS)\nenvironment permeated by usability errors.
EHealth\nsystems expanded workloads and system demands\nwere onerous\, in
creasing the clinicians’ scepticism\nof reliance on information technolo
gy. Consequently\nmany clinicians had developed trade-offs to avoid\nrelia
nce an eHIS.\nThe trade-offs include IT support avoidance and\nshared pass
words to PKI and computer accounts.\nHandover-sheets populated by transcri
bed notes\nwere circulated between all clinicians present. The\npractices
ensure paper persistence and escalate\nP&S threats to data confidentiality
\, integrity and\navailability. Study evidence suggests poor eHISs\nhamper
patient care and may represent a larger\nP&S threat than indicated by stu
dies to date\n\n*Bio:*\n\nI'm interested in all aspects of health informat
ion system security. My research concerns clinical health informatics\, bi
oinformatic data exchange standards and information security. I've develop
ed a particular emphasis on e-health tools and their contribution to workf
low methodologies in the health sector.\n\nA member of the Mobile Health R
esearch Group (MHRG)\, I work very closely with colleagues at Information
Technology.\n\nUseful sources of information on health information securit
y and privacy are widely scattered. The web page published by the Australi
an Privacy Foundation (APF) is a notable exception. I chair the Health Sub
Committee and love the work I do with them.\n\nMy professional membership
s include the Australian College of Health Informatics (ACHI) \, the Healt
h Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) and the Australian Health Inform
atics Education Council (AHIEC).\n\nI am the Academic Convenor\, the Honou
rs Degree of Bachelor of Medical Science\, Medicine\, Nursing & Health Sci
ences at Monash University. Academic oversight of students enrolled for a
BMedSc(Hons)degree is challenging but fun and I'm fascinated by the resear
ch programs on which they work.\n\nMore "info":http://users.monash.edu.au/
