DESCRIPTION:In recent years a number of claims have been made for nonhuman
\nculture\, in species such as chimpanzees\, monkeys and dolphins.\nHoweve
r\, sceptics have argued that there is not strong evidence that\nsuch trad
itions are the result of social transmission of behaviour.\nThere is clear
ly a need for methods that can detect social\ntransmission in freely inter
acting populations of animals. I will\npresent a number of statistical met
hods that colleagues and I have\nbeen developing to detect social transmis
sion\, and determine the\nmechanisms of transmission. I will describe how
we have applied such\nmethods to data from monkeys\, chimpanzees\, starlin
 gs\, budgerigars and\nmeerkats.
