DESCRIPTION:The deficiency of a finite presentation of a group is the numb
 er of generators minus the number of relators. In this talk I shall explai
 n that a certain class of free-by-cyclic groups resolves the old question 
 of whether one can simultaneously minimise the rank (number of generators)
  and maximise the deficiency.
