SUMMARY:Electromagnetic eavesdropping on computers - Markus Kuhn (Universi
 ty of Cambridge)

DESCRIPTION:The traditional techniques for remote unauthorized access to p
rivate and confidential information -- tapping communication links\, code
breaking\, impersonation -- become increasingly infeasible as the use of
modern cryptographic protection techniques proliferates. Those in the bus
iness of obtaining information from other people's computers without conse
nt -- criminals and spies\, intelligence agency and law enforcement techn
icians\, private detectives\, market researchers -- are therefore increasi
ngly looking for alternative eavesdropping techniques. One class of alter
natives utilises those unintentional information leaks caused by the physi
cal/analogue underlying processes in computers and peripherals that can be
sensed\, amplified and decoded at a distance.\n\nThis talk provides an in
troduction\, overview and demonstration of electromagnetic and optical pa
ssive eavesdropping techniques for personal computers\, focusing in partic
ular on video display units. It will present new techniques for eavesdrop
ping liquid-crystal and cathode-ray tube displays and will discuss the in
formation-security threat posed by these\, along with simple new protectiv
 e measures.\n
