DESCRIPTION:Protein misfolding and aggregation are characteristic of a wid
e range of neurodegenerative diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that pro
tein aggregation may occur within liquid condensates formed through phase
separation. This mechanism of aggregation creates new challenges and oppor
tunities for drug discovery for protein misfolding diseases\, which are ot
herwise still largely incurable. I will discuss the possibility of inhibit
ing the process of condensation-driven aggregation using small molecules.
By using a chemical kinetics approach\, I will illustrate an example of a
compound that inhibits the primary nucleation step in protein aggregation
within condensates. These initial results suggest a possible therapeutic r
 oute for several neurodegenerative disorders.
