DESCRIPTION:Elastic instabilities are ubiquitous in everyday life\, from t
he wrinkling of skin to the rapid inversion of an umbrella. While understa
nding these patterns from a static point of view is relatively standard\,
their dynamics is more involved and relatively neglected. In this talk\, I
will discuss two specific examples that we have studied recently: dynamic
buckling and elastic snap-through. These examples demonstrate the crucial
\, and perhaps surprising\, role that the rate of loading plays in both ho
w quickly instability occurs and the pattern that is ultimately observed.
