DESCRIPTION:Children and young people’s mental health was a public healt
 h priority even before the pandemic\, in large part due to increases in th
 e number presenting to healthcare services with a mental health problem. I
  shall show trends in mental healthcare use in children and young people i
 n the decade before the pandemic\, identifying likely clinical trajectorie
 s after first contact. I shall then show trends in mental health symptoms 
 in young people\, as measured by high-quality population surveys. Then\, u
 sing a mixture of methods\, including causal mediation analysis\, I shall 
 discuss potential reasons for the increase and speculate on where we shoul
 d go next.
