DESCRIPTION:Transition following discharge from mental health hospital is
high risk in terms of relapse\, readmission and suicide. Discharge plannin
g supports transition and reduces risk\, but it is a complex activity invo
lving varied interacting systemic elements. The MINDS study aims to improv
e the process for people being discharged\, their supporters\, and staff w
ho work in mental health services\, by understanding\, co-designing and ev
aluating implementation of a systemic approach to discharge planning. The
research and co-design methodologies are designed to integrate the perspec
tives of all key stakeholders to develop an approach to discharge that is
implementable and\, critically\, meets and balances the needs of service u
sers\, their supporters\, staff and the system.\n\nThe MINDS study (NIHR 1
33013) integrates realist research and an engineering-informed systems app
roach across three stages:\n\n· Stage 1 applies realist review and evalua
tion using a systems approach to develop programme theories of discharge p
lanning.\n\n· Stage 2 uses an Engineering Better Care framework to codesi
gn a novel systemic discharge intervention.\n\n· Stage 3 is a process and
economic evaluation of the discharge planning approach in practice.\n\nTh
e programme theories and components of the approach will be refined throug
hout the study to develop a systemic approach to discharge with accompanyi
ng materials and tools to support implementation\, ready for a future clin
ical trial. The idea for the MINDS study was conceived from the co-lead’
s lived-experience (Sarah Rae) and includes both lived-experience research
ers and a Lived Experience Advisory Group.
